MICR Performance Guarantee

What the MICR Performance Guarantee covers

The guarantee pays bank fees for rejected checks over your bank's acceptable rate, where our materials caused the reject. Five conditions apply, and they apply together rather than individually.

What it pays for

When a bank reader/sorter cannot read the MICR line, the item leaves straight-through processing and is handled by a person, which the bank charges for. The guarantee covers those fees above your bank's acceptable rate, where our materials were the cause.

Two parts of that sentence do the work. "Above your bank's acceptable rate" means the guarantee is not a promise of zero rejects, because no printing system delivers zero. "Where our materials caused the reject" means the cause has to be the printer, the toner, the fonts, or the supplies rather than something else in the process.

This is why the guarantee is possible at all only because we supply the printer, the software, and the toner. A vendor who sells one of the three cannot underwrite a result that depends on all three.

The five conditions

All five apply together. Missing one means the guarantee does not apply, which is worth understanding before a substitution is made for what looks like a small saving.

The MICR Performance Guarantee applies when all five are true

  1. A Rosetta Technologies branded printer

Purchased in the United States or Canada.

  2. Bought from an authorized source

Rosetta Technologies or an authorized reseller.

  3. Approved supplies

Toner, developer, cartridges, maintenance kits and PCDUs.

  4. Rosetta Technologies MICR fonts

    E-13B and CMC-7 as supplied.

  5. Continuous maintenance

An approved service plan or an approved provider.

All five, together

Miss one and the guarantee does not apply. Mixing standard and MICR parts is explicitly excluded.

What it pays: bank fees for rejected checks above the acceptable rate your bank sets, where Rosetta Technologies materials caused the rejection.

The explicit exclusion

Mixing standard and MICR toner cartridges or photoconductor drum units is stated as an explicit exclusion.

The reason is mechanical rather than contractual. Standard toner carries no iron oxide. A machine that has run standard toner retains residue through the developer unit and the paper path, and that residue dilutes the magnetic signal of the MICR toner that follows it. The output looks identical and reads weaker.

Why supplies are a condition rather than a preference

Two of the five conditions are about consumables, which reads like vendor lock-in until you follow the mechanism.

ProMarkā„¢ MICR toner is formulated per print engine rather than sold as one universal product, and it is the first polyester-based MICR toner in the industry. A polyester base holds together and tolerates heat better than the polystyrene base most MICR toner still uses, which matters because a reader/sorter is a hot, fast, mechanically aggressive environment. It is independently tested at a 0.1% reject rate or lower on an IBM 3890 high-speed reader/sorter. Typical MICR toner in this industry rejects at 2% to 4%.

Maintenance kits are the other half. The fuser bonds toner to the sheet, and bonding quality is signal strength. A kit replaces the fuser, the photoconductor drum, the transfer roller, the pickup rollers, and the separation pads before wear reaches the reject report.

A guarantee on an outcome that depends on both is only underwritable if both are known quantities.

The written terms

This page summarizes the program. The written terms come with your agreement and cover the claim process, the evidence a claim needs, any reimbursement limits, the time allowed for a claim, and how your bank's acceptable rate is established.

If the guarantee matters to the purchase, ask for the written terms before you order. We send them on request.

Continuous maintenance is one of the five guarantee conditions

A lapsed plan is not only a print quality risk. The five conditions apply together, so missing this one puts the MICR Performance Guarantee out of reach.

Toner and consumables are not covered by any plan. Custom plans are available for workgroup printers.

Why a reject rate is a cost rather than a quality score

  1. A weak MICR signal

A worn fuser, the wrong toner, or paper outside the specification.

  2. The bank rejects the item

The reader/sorter cannot read it magnetically.

  3. Exception handling

The item is processed by hand at the bank.

  4. A bank fee

Charged on rejects above the rate your bank accepts.

The toner is the first link in that chain

ProMark MICR toner tests at a 0.1 percent reject rate or lower. The industry-typical range is 2 to 4 percent.

Common questions

What does the MICR Performance Guarantee actually pay?

Bank fees for rejected checks over your bank's acceptable rate, where our materials caused the reject. It is not a promise of zero rejects, because no printing system delivers zero.

Does using third-party toner void the guarantee?

Approved supplies are one of the five conditions. The guarantee requires MICR toner, developer, cartridges, maintenance kits, and photoconductor drum units that we manufacture. All five conditions apply together, so missing this one means the guarantee does not apply.

Can I mix standard and MICR toner in the same printer?

No. That is an explicit exclusion. Standard toner carries no iron oxide, and residue from it in the developer unit and paper path dilutes the magnetic signal of the MICR toner that follows. The output looks identical and reads weaker.

Do I have to keep a service plan?

Continuous maintenance under an approved service plan is one of the five conditions. The mechanism behind it is that the fuser bonds toner to the sheet and bonding quality is signal strength, so wear in the paper path becomes a reject rate.

Does the guarantee apply outside the US and Canada?

It covers Rosetta Technologies branded printers purchased in the US or Canada. For anything outside that, ask us before ordering.

Where are the full terms?

The written terms come with your agreement, including the claim process, any reimbursement limits and the time allowed for a claim. Ask for them before you order and we will send them.
