Maintenance kits

The parts that wear are the parts that decide print quality

A maintenance kit is a set of replacement parts for a MICR printer. Each printer has a preset maintenance interval based on pages printed, and the kit is what resets it.

Every printer is different, so the parts in a kit differ too. What does not differ is why they matter: the fuser fuses toner into the check stock, the transfer roller moves toner onto the page, and the separation pads hold tension so stock feeds cleanly. When a separation pad wears, it causes paper jams. When a fuser degrades, toner adhesion degrades with it.

Ignoring a maintenance alert causes serious wear and lost production, and can cause permanent damage. It is also one of the conditions attached to the MICR Performance Guarantee: the printer has to be continuously maintained under an approved service plan.

The paper path: where a kit replaces parts

  1. Pickup rollersFeed stock from the tray.
  2. Separation padsKeep tension. Worn pads jam.
  3. Photoconductor drumCarries the image.
  4. Transfer rollerMoves toner to the sheet.
  5. Fuser assemblyFuses toner into the stock.

The fuser is the part tied most directly to toner adhesion, which is one of the five criteria every ProMark formulation is measured against.

The parts a kit replaces, in the order the paper meets them. Contents vary per printer, and each kit is rated in pages rather than months.
What each part does

Six components, six different failure modes

Fuser assembly

A pair of rollers that fuse the toner into the check stock. Directly tied to toner adhesion, which is one of the five criteria every ProMark formulation is evaluated against.

Photoconductor drum

Carries the image to the page. Kit A for the SP 8400DNM is rated at 160,000 impressions and includes the drum, transfer unit, and waste toner bottle.

Transfer roller

An electrically charged roller beneath the toner cartridge. As paper passes the drum it also passes this roller, which transfers toner onto the page.

Pickup rollers

Also called feed or separation rollers. They pull check stock from the tray and feed it into the printer.

Separation pads

They apply tension so stock is pushed into the printer one sheet at a time. A worn pad causes paper jams.

Consumable extras

Kits may also include a corona assembly, a fan assembly, cleaning cloths, and gloves.

Yields are page counts, not time intervals, so the schedule follows what each machine actually prints.

Maintenance is a condition of the guarantee

The MICR Performance Guarantee requires the printer to be continuously maintained under one of our service plans or by an approved service provider, using approved maintenance kits. A lapsed interval is not only a print quality risk.
